When you combine a running race with a charity event, and then throw a trip to the local donut shop into the mix, you get an athletic event requiring both fitness and the ability to chow down. And one which also happened to raise $122,000 for kids in North Carolina last year.

Talk about a mixed message. Run two and a half miles, scarf down a dozen donuts, and then run another two and half miles back to the start, in under an hour, in order to raise funds for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.

“To complete the Krispy Kreme Challenge, competitors begin at the NC State Belltower, run 2.5 miles to the Krispy Kreme store on Peace Street, eat 1 dozen doughnuts, and run 2.5 miles back to the Belltower – all in under an hour.”

And just so you know what you’re getting into, here’s what a dozen Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Donuts contain:

  • 2400 Calories
  • 144 Grams of Fat
  • 120 Grams of Sugar
  • 1140 MG of Sodium

The number of calories eaten on the day of the race (in over 1000 pounds of donuts!) is said to be enough energy to power a 60W lightbulb for 44.5 years, or the average US home for 13 years.

Of course, if you don’t want to eat the dozen donuts, you can still run as a “Casual Runner” (who aren’t required to eat all of the doughnuts), but why would you run in something called the Krispy Kreme Challenge if you were going to skip the donuts?

“The Krispy Kreme Challenge started in December 2004 as a dare between a few NC State undergraduate students. Sophomore Ben Gaddy took home bragging rights that afternoon, running the race in 34 minutes and 27 seconds.”

The 2012 Krispy Kreme Challenge expects about 7700 runners to compete on February 4th.
