Happy Chinese New Year! Yesterday marked the beginning of the Lunar New Year, commemorated by the Chinese with fireworks and family time. This latest celebration brings in the Year of the Dragon, which is fitting because it is during this year that a new documentary celebrating one of China’s most revered “dragons” — martial arts legend Bruce Lee — hits the silver screen.

Bruce Lee, one of the most influential people in modern pop culture history, was more than a martial arts genius. Using his philosophy, prowess, and charisma, Bruce Lee managed to elevate himself from a displaced Chinese immigrant to a Hollywood icon, not only for his skill in the martial arts, but his style and attitude. His influence and inspiration is still evident today, not only in movies like Tarantino’s Kill Bill, but in the motivation behind world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, UFC champion Jon Jones, and basketball superstar Kobe Bryant — plus other celebrities of sports and entertainment — all of which are interviewed in the film. To quote from the I Am Bruce Lee movie trailer, “He’s put balls on Chinese men”:

Although Bruce Lee died mysteriously at the young age of 32, his legacy has survived for decades. This latest documentary film — produced by the FX Network and their MMA affiliate UFC — aims to reintroduce the martial arts legend to a new generation, so that the spirit of Bruce Lee lives on.

The theatrical release is a limited engagement, with showings only on February 9th and 15th in select theaters nationwide. Check the official website for tickets and locations.
