Porsche has given a name to its new small SUV that will be released in the next 18 months. It was previously referred to as the Cajun, but now Porsche has dubbed it the Macan. The word Macan is “is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics.”
When the Porsche Macan enters production in the fall of 2013 it will share its platform with the Audi Q5. Porsche is investing 500 million euro in its Leipzig, Germany plant to prepare for the new SUV. The plant currently builds the Cayenne SUV and with the new investment 1,000 jobs will be added.
As the fifth Porsche model line, the Macan is a central plank of Strategy 2018, by which the sports car manufacturer wishes to expand its model portfolio. Porsche intends the Macan to emulate the success of the Cayenne.
