You wouldn’t think it from the looks of this very gaudy Volkswagon Beetle, but this car was made entirely from trash.
As part of the German automaker’s Think Blue Campaign, Haribaabu Natesaan recreated a Beetle using more than 4,400 units of scrap — 800 drink lids, 800 spark plugs, 200 bottle caps and a host of other miscellany, such as hard disks, computer keyboards, CDs, speakers, audio cassettes, beer cans, barbecue sticks, a flat screen monitor, telecom wires and typewriters. Think Blue collected the scrap from various clean-up drives.

The car was showcased at Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda festival, which ended Feb. 12, to highlight sustainability. In Mumbai alone, 7,025 tons of waste is produced each day. “It chokes our planet,” says Volkswagon’s video, below, which shows a timelapse of the 16 days and nights that went into this project. The recreated Beetle was an effort of 23 people, totaling 14,000 man hours.
