Comet Hale-Bopp
Comet Hale-Bopp streaks through the night sky on March 1997, in this photograph taken near Los Angeles. The comet's bluish tail is an ion tail, visible due to the sunlight's reaction with ionized carbon monoxide particles, and the white tail is the dust tail.
