Civilian, on the homefront, in Bedford, Va. Her town lost more men, for its size, than any other community in the United States.

Lucille lost two brothers in the D-Day invasion. "We were a fairly small community," she says. "There were 35 men from Bedford with Company A that hit the beach that day, and within a few minutes, 19 of them had died … "
