Her Unit's Mission: To care for sick and wounded soldiers at the beachhead and on flights back to hospitals in England.

"These poor kids on our plane, we couldn't show them that we were afraid: Absolutely, that was unconscionable," she says. "And some of those kids were 18. They were just about the same age as I was, and here I am taking care of these boys and not knowing exactly what to do, even though in training we had a lot of training about emergency care, but this was emergency plus. This was something that we never, never expected to see.
