So, here's the deal: Greg Child, a world-renowned mountaineer, writer and photographer, went to Mount Everest with Russell Brice's Himalayan Experience (Himex) team to document the 2007 climb from Everest's North Face.
Greg will acclimatize and climb with the team up to North Col. He is equipped with laptops, cameras and a sat phone so that he can capture the action, drama and making of a Discovery Channel documentary. He plans to send up to four dispatches with photos per week, as well as a few video clips when he can get them down the mountain.
Everest base camp is more wired than you'd expect, but it's no Wi-Fi hot spot (but wait, Greg says it IS a Wi-Fi hot spot. Still, that Fi is really expensive). So Greg will send his material to me, Trisha Creekmore, Discovery Channel interactive executive producer, and I'll edit and post to the blog. I will monitor your comments and send them on to Greg.
Since Greg will be climbing, acclimatizing, reporting, writing and generally working, he won't respond to individual comments. He will, however, take your comments into consideration as he covers the evolving story, incorporating ongoing themes and burning issues into his storytelling.
About Greg Child
Greg Child was raised on rock climbing. During his 30-year career, he has conquered some of the highest peaks in the world, including Mount Everest and K2, the world’s second highest peak. He is also an accomplished big wall climber and has established several first ascents on well-known walls such as Yosemite's El Capitan.
Greg is considered an especially literate mountaineering storyteller. His book Postcards From the Ledge took home the Banff Mountain Festival Book Award in 1997. He also won an Emmy for his video Hitting the Wall in 1998. He is a regular contributor to magazines such as Outside, Backpacker, and National Geographic Adventure, and writes a regular column in Climbing.
