Hubble opened a new eye on the universe in April 2002, following a successfully space shuttle servicing mission to install a new high-resolution digital camera and improve the observatory's power system. The first images taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys surprised even the astronomers.

"(Hubble's) new camera has already shown us that, even after 12 years of great science and astounding images, we haven't seen anything yet," said NASA's space sciences chief Ed Weiler.
