women and children first
Picture: Library of Congress

The Philadelphia North American ran this cartoon in the summer of 1915, taking a severe jab at the kaiser's perceived villainy. At the time, the massive secondary explosion that blew out the Lusitania's bow and doomed most of the passengers was thought to have been caused by a "wantonly cruel" second torpedo. The explosion actually had another cause, but its devastating effects meant that only six of the ship's 48 lifeboats made it into the water upright and afloat, rendering "Women and Children First" a largely hopeless proposition.
