a moving picture
Picture: Library of Congress

Late in 1915, the German navy began issuing movie cameras to U-boats so their crews could chronicle their operations. Most of the combat footage covers surface actions, largely the sinking of forewarned and evacuated merchant ships by submarine deck guns. Some of this film was released for use in public newsreels, since the Germans were anxious to demonstrate their compliance with "lawful warfare." But the artist of this cartoon -- from the Nov. 23, 1915, edition of the New York Herald -- came up with this fanciful scene to make sure the crime of the Lusitania was not forgotten.
