assorted cargo for the return trip
Picture: Library of Congress

By the summer of 1916, Germany was fast losing the propaganda war. This failure was in large part self-inflicted, exemplified by the so-called Von Igel Affair in which a German diplomat, Wolf von Igel, was caught by secret service agents with hundreds of documents outlining German plans to sabotage America's material support of the Allies. In this cartoon from July 1916, "Assorted Cargo for the Return Trip," the German ambassador sits atop "a nest of vipers" representing the exposed plots, including the sinking of the Lusitania. Also featured are "Von Igel's Safe" and a bizarre dachshund inspired by an Oct. 1915 speech given by an Anglophilic Teddy Roosevelt in which he called for an end to "hyphenated Americanism," in this case, German-Americans. In the background, the German merchant submarine Deutschland stands ready to load its sinister cargo.
