The Lusitania tragedy still had a powerful hold on American public opinion when the United States declared war on Germany in April 1917. This recruiting poster for the U.S. Navy spares no punches, exhorting its sailors to avenge the slaughter of innocents. Earlier that year, an increasingly desperate Germany reinstituted unrestricted submarine warfare, a move that helped push America over the brink.
