devil's friend

Once America became a full-fledged combatant, her anti-German propaganda machine went into high gear. This example from a 1918 collectible card series "exposes" the long-held, but scarcely concealed suspicion that the kaiser was in league with the devil. The artist subtly gives the German war leader a slightly gloomy demeanor as if he's uncomfortable with the relationship, but the bloody sword and entwined tails make it clear that there's no escape from the judgment of civilized nations.
