Clouded Leopard

The Expedition Borneo team was especially crushed that their ultimate quarry — the clouded leopard — eluded them in Imbak Canyon. But a cast Tara made of its print is extremely important proof that the endangered cat lives in the canyon and should be protected there.

The clouded leopard is named for the cloud-like spots on its coat that provide camouflage in the forest habitat. The cat's stealthy habits make it difficult to study, so reliable estimates of its population are nonexistent. Only six clouded leopards have ever been radio-collared and studied, all within Thailand. Almost all data on the animal comes from studies of the cats in captivity.

We do know that clouded leopards are excellent climbers that can hang upside down from branches and descend tree trunks headfirst. Because it is sufficiently different from other members of the cat family, the clouded leopard is classified as the sole member of the genus Neofelis.
