The eruption of Washington state's Mount St. Helens, shown here on July 22, 1980, is considered significant by the standards of the continental United States. And while the eruption killed 57 people, it couldn't compare in any way with the power and destruction of a supervolcano, like those in Yellowstone's prehistoric past.
