6:00 a.m. — Mir 2 surfaces. James Cameron appears tired but excited. After we lost the link, his remaining ROV left its garage normally and flew well. Knowing the challenge, Cameron immediately piloted the bot to F deck on the Titanic, to an area that has never been explored. In a half hour or so, the ROV entered the Turkish Baths, a tile-walled room that, to our knowledge, had not been seen since 1912. Cameron brings the hardy souls who are still awake to greet him down to mission control to watch the bot footage. Remarkably, the tile is still in place. The team of historians is outwardly giddy with excitement.
8:00 a.m. — The crew of the Keldysh sends signals down to the transponders on the bottom that helped the Mir pilots find the wreck. The transponders come alive and ascend to the surface where the crew retrieves them.
9:00 a.m. — We are steaming northwest for St. John's. Leg 1 of the expedition is over. We will regroup on the mainland and return to sea for the beginning of Leg 2 on July 18.
