7:30 a.m. — A beautiful morning. A clear blue sky broken only by a few altocumulus clouds covers the restful sea. A few contented gulls bob near the stern.
In the end, the day is disappointing. After hours of preparation, Dr. Anatoly Sagalevitch scrubs the dive operations for the day. A low-voltage power problem in Mir 2 fries a circuit board in a control panel, filling the capsule with smoke. A similar occurrence during a dive could prove to be deadly. The team takes the day to trace all the power sources and locate the problem, which is eventually isolated and remedied. Dive ops are scheduled for tomorrow.
The planned air drop of satellite parts is also scrubbed. The team responsible for the ROVs has new spare circuit boards en route to St. John's to join the air drop. Dave Cameron asks the pilot to overnight in St. John's to allow time for the ROV parts to arrive.
