Helen Fields
When Helen graduated from college, she thought she wanted to be a biologist. Living in Norway and Japan for a while, Helen started a Ph.D., but eventually decided she wanted to be a science journalist instead. She learned how to do that in the graduate program in science writing at the University of California–Santa Cruz. After the Santa Cruz program, Helen covered health at U.S.News and World Report for four years, then was a writer and editor at National Geographic for a year and a half. She is now a full-time freelance writer and has written for Smithsonian, Science, the Washington Post, Washington Post Express, the Monterey County Herald, and others.
Chris Linder
Chris uses photography as a tool to educate and inspire the public about science and wildlife conservation issues. He works closely with researchers in the field, documenting them as they study the environment -- whether it's from the deck of a ship or a tent near a penguin colony. His education and training as an oceanographer give Chris a special insight into photographing marine science and he has spent over a year of his life at sea on research ships, with over half of that time spent in the Arctic Ocean. Chris' photographs have been featured in museum exhibits -- notably the Field Museum and the Smithsonian, books -- including his own Photographer's Guide to Cape Cod, calendars, and magazines worldwide.
