Q&A with Director of Photography, Cameron Glendenning
What special techniques, if any, do they use to film crab fishing?
Remaining standing while filming on a crab boat is its own special technique. It is most important for the camera person on deck to learn the movements of a working crab deck before inserting themselves into "the dance". There are places to be and not to be at varying times. It is imperative to learn where is safe to be and when.
What kind of equipment do they use and how is it different from equipment used in normal conditions?
We use a variety of HD cameras. We order over 60 cameras per season but the most important thing is waterproof, waterproof, waterproof. Over the past seven seasons we have tried every possible waterproofing system from underwater housings to customized rain bags. The only thing that has ever proved worthy is a ziplock bag and some electrical tape.
