Breaks for the crew are rare. The uncertainty surrounding how long a season will last — as well as the difficulty in knowing precisely where to drop the pots in order to catch the most crab — results in the men pulling 20-hour shifts, trying to catch as many crabs as possible before the Alaska Department of Fish and Game calls an end to the season.
