2 Ways a Farmer Gets Up Close and Personal With a Turkey

By Charles W. Bryant

2 Ways a Farmer Gets Up Close and Personal With a
Thanksgiving meals vary from house to house, but most American families count on a big fat turkey on the dinner table. Breeding turkeys to be big and fat (and tasty) isn't the greatest for the creatures' sex lives, however. In fact, when a turkey's breast is too large, the bird can lose its ability to procreate.

And that's when the turkey farmer steps in to do the unthinkable.

1: Semen Sucking

When the male turkey becomes too fat to perform his manly duties, humans must step in. There's really only one way to get the turkey semen out of the big fella - by sucking it out through a tube. About once a month, a dedicated turkey farm worker inserts a tube into the turkey's you-know-what and sucks until its semen flows into a waiting jar. If you're up for this dirty job, just remember to seal up the turkey's rear end first. If you don't, the semen could be mixed with turkey poop!

2: Semen Implanting

There's always a part two when it comes to artificial insemination. Once you get the semen from the male turkey's special place, you need to get it into the female's reproductive system. The same lucky farm worker who executed the extraction takes a syringe and gets to work on the ladies. Holding the female by the legs and squeezing the right area should reveal the oviduct hole. This is where the eggs are waiting to be fertilized by your jar full of goodness. Fill the syringe, drop it into the right area and within a week or so, you should get about five to six new eggs from the mama turkey.

Just remember who you REALLY should be giving thanks to next November!

As seen in "Dirty Jobs: Turkey Farmer."
