MYTH: IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THE TERM, "BEER GOGGLES"?

beer goggles

Finding: PLAUSIBLE

Explanation: The "beer goggle" theory is based on years of anecdotal evidence from both men and women. Supposedly, the more alcohol you drink, the more attractive the people around you start to look. Figuring out how to test such a subjective myth was enough to drive the MythBusters to drink.

Literally.

In the test, MythBusters Jamie Hyneman, Adam Savage and Kari Byron rated the attractiveness of people in photos while at various levels of intoxication — from sober to buzzed to drunk. The results were inconclusive when the trio rated pictures while buzzed, but one finding was certain: As you go from buzzed to drunk, people definitely start to look more appealing.

One reason for this may be that alcohol works as a depressant, meaning that it slows down your body's central nervous system. This can change your perception, increase sexual arousal and impair your judgment, making you more tempted to go chat up someone you might not have given a second glance to earlier in the night. So for now, it appears these bar-side findings are somewhat validated.

Don't say we didn't warn you.

As seen in "MythBusters: Alcohols Myths."
