CAN A SURFBOARD BECOME A LETHAL WEAPON?

Surfboard Killer

Finding: BUSTED

Explanation: In Lethal Weapon II, an SUV carrying a surfboard on its roof crashes into a car, launching the surfboard into still another car's windshield and decapitating its driver. But could a surfboard sailing through the air at 30 miles (48 kilometers) per hour really slice through glass so easily?

MythBusters Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara re-created the Hollywood pileup with cable rigs to precisely control the wreckage. However, each time the Mythbusters SUV slammed into the crash car, the surfboard didn't sail straight ahead into the "target" car. Instead, its irregular shape sent it on a downward-dipping flight pattern.

As a result, the surfboard struck the target car without shattering the windshield. Even when the MythBusters smoothed out the surfboard shape and launched it at a faster speed, it still couldn't bust through the energy-absorbing windshield glass — or this Lethal Weapon myth.
