MYTH: COULD SOMEONE REALLY KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF?

COULD SOMEONE REALLY KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF?

Finding: PLAUSIBLE

Explanation: The first time the MythBusters tested — and busted — whether someone could knock your socks off, fans didn't buy the results. With viewers displeased over several aspects of the original experiment, including the punching style, elasticity of the socks and positioning of Buster the dummy, MythBusters Tory Belleci, Grant Imahara and Kari Byron took another swing at the old saying.

To maximize their chances of beating Buster's feet bare, the MythBusters crafted smoother, humanlike feet and legs. They also traded in his tight sports socks for non-elastic wool-knit socks. After being walloped with Grant's patented punching machine, Buster's socks didn't budge.

The team then proceeded to carry out 20 or so sock tests to no avail. But a 600-pound (272-kilogram) steel beam welded to a 13,000-pound (5,897-kilogram) truck finally did the trick. Barreling toward Buster at 65 miles per hour (105 kilometers per hour), the beam struck the dummy with 10,000 times the force of a heavyweight champ's fist.

Sure enough, the socks flew off, confirming that fans' theories had beaten the MythBusters to the punch.
