The Athlete: JIMMY "BLAZE" FEJES
Episode: Longest Snowmobile Backflip | Premiere: March 5, 2007
Perry's Thoughts:
As a true lover of all machines that go fast and make a lot of noise, I had a lot of fun on this shoot. Backflipping a snowmobile is not like backflipping a motorcycle. It is much heavier and more cumbersome, and if the slightest mistake is made, the outcome is usually bad. But Jimmy Blaze makes it look easy. This was another of those really cold and miserable shoot locations, but I guess if you're going to do a snowmobile stunt, there's gotta be snow. The first time Jimmy hit the ramp and backflipped the snowmobile, he made it look graceful and effortless, even though he crashed. I knew that if we could fix the ski, the next time he would make it — and he didn't let us down. Flying upside down over 40 feet in the air and landing perfectly 102 feet away was awesome to watch. It makes it hard to argue with Jimmy when he says he's the biggest, baddest snowmobiler on the planet.
Eli's Thoughts:
For the stunt with Jimmy Blaze we went out to Salt Lake City, Utah, where it was as cold as can be with just enough snow. Jimmy has helped to make freestyle sledding a main event, with many accomplishments along the way. We were lucky enough to have a chance to ride some sleds around before we got to the stunt — what a blast! The new Yamaha Phazer was just awesome; it looked like some sort of space age machine and had the power to get you in some real trouble. For practice, Jimmy set up two ramps: a "comp" ramp and a "super-kicker," each having different angles. He hit it a couple of times and, at first, he came down pretty hard. He made a couple of good landings and set the ramp back to 100 feet, to the hoped for landing zone. Jason realized he wasn't getting the power he needed from the supercharger, so he called it a day, turning the machine over to Mac. Mac worked through the night in hopes of getting it fixed in time. On Stunt Day, the wind had kicked up, so Jimmy decided to wait it out. With no sign of the wind dying down, he decided to go for it, and he got suited up and moving. At first, it looked good but the wind seemed to hold him back, and when he landed, he didn't quite make it — the crash was horrific. He seemed a little shaken and was bleeding a bit, but he was already looking to go again. However, the problem was the sled had taken a beating, so Perry and Mac went right to work and got it going again. With the sun setting, time was running out and we all knew this would be Jimmy's last chance. He suited up one more time and got on his sled. He went right for it, and before you knew it, he was back on the ground riding away with the longest backflip ever on a snowmobile! Jimmy pulled it off and set an incredible record.
