PATIENTS: RAFAEL QUINTERO AND DOLORES QUINTERO
The Quinteros came to Baltimore in May 2006, as the last couple in the triple kidney swap. Rafael suffered from kidney disease and in 1997, his first transplant failed. Dolores planned all along to donate her kidney to her husband, but the two did not match. Dr. Robert Montgomery and his program was the only place where Rafael could receive a transplant.
Mr. Quintero passed away on Oct. 1, 2006, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He is survived by his wife Dolores and his children. Before Rafael passed, he was able to attend his son's wedding in Miami, Fla., with Dolores on his arm.
Dolores has recovered very quickly from her kidney operation and like Tonya, would like to be an advocate for paired kidney donation.
