PATIENT NO. 1: MARGARET

Diagnosed with scoliosis at age 2, Margaret has since undergone 12 corrective surgeries by Hospital for Special Surgery's Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei. Now, at age 10, Margaret is rapidly approaching her growth spurt, which could undermine a decade's worth of correction. To protect Margaret's spine, Dr. Boachie will fuse it into a permanent position, which should hold for the rest of her life. If all goes well, Margaret will attend junior high school and for the first time in her life, not have to wear a back brace.

Margaret currently resides in Massapequa, N.Y., with her parents, Patti and Bill, and her sister, Brigette. She enjoys dancing and pool parties.
