In the episode "Awake Brain," Dominic Bakewell is diagnosed with a rapidly growing brain tumor called an astrocytoma/glioma. After his second seizure, he seeks help from neurosurgeon Dr. Linda Liau, who removes the tumor while Bakewell is awake, singing a tune.
What is a brain tumor?
A brain tumor starts with the abnormal growth of cells in the brain. If these cells grow rapidly they can form a malignant (cancerous) tumor. Slow-growing cells can form a noncancerous or benign tumor.
What is a glioma?
According to the Mayo Clinic, gliomas (primary brain tumors) start in the brain or spinal cord tissue. They do not spread to other areas of the body but can spread within the nervous system. The most common gliomas — astrocytomas — start in brain cells called astrocytes and can occur in most parts of the brain.
Signs and Symptoms
Some common symptoms of a brain tumor include headaches, nausea, vomiting, difficulty speaking, weakness or paralysis in one part of the body or face, and seizures. Since these symptoms can also be signs of other conditions, it is important to see your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Brain tumors are diagnosed with an exam, usually after the patient complains of symptoms. Tests can include a cranial MRI. If necessary, a biopsy is performed to test for cancer; this is when a piece of tumor is removed for examination under a microscope. Treatment for brain tumors depends on type, size and location; it includes radiation, chemotherapy and/or surgery. However, even if a tumor is removed, there is the possibility it may grow back.
