SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT
One of the mysteries of the human brain is its ability to create melodies and then allow us to release them in song. That precious gift was nearly taken from Dominic Bakewell when doctors discovered he had a brain tumor.
But with the help of his wife, the Internet and a gifted neurosurgeon, Dominic is on his way to making music once again.
"The prognosis could not have been better from the operation. They got 100 percent of the tumor ... I'm pretty much fine. I'm still in speech therapy but that's just to help get my thoughts out; I don't really need it much anymore."
Now Dominic's only thoughts are working on his next musical project.
"I've got about 10 songs compiled and I want to get a couple more written, then I want to launch into doing a children's album and recording it."
Dominic's tumor was initially diagnosed as a grade two astrocytoma/glioma. But after Dr. Linda Liau held consultations with a few other doctors, she changed the diagnosis to grade three. That means the tumor is aggressive and more likely to return. Dominic will undergo more treatment in an attempt to prevent recurrence of the tumor.
"I will probably end up going to radiation for six weeks starting in January and probably follow that with chemotherapy because it's a grade three now."
But his outlook is good and he has some advice to others, regardless of their health.
"All I can say," says Dominic, "is just appreciate every moment of life and just cherish it because you don't know when it's going to end."
