AFFAIR OF THE HEART
Surviving an invasive surgical procedure at birth is amazing, but doing it a second time — just five days later — is nothing short of a miracle.
Now Sebastian Martin is a bouncing, bubbly 4-month-old with grins, grunts and gripes.
Since the show taping, the Martins have been spending most of their time just being a normal family. Parents Anne and Tracy say Sebastian is so normal, they almost forget the harrowing ordeal of Aug. 24.
Of course, the Martins are not your typical doting parents. Being mechanical engineers, they understood the need to "fix" what was ailing their son; however, they also were aware of the risks associated with a second surgery.
"We worried. I'm not going to say we didn't, but I always remained confident in the doctors," says Anne.
Despite understanding it, the experience was still tough. Anne explains how she felt while still in the hospital recovering from the birth, when her husband sent her a picture of Sebastian on her cell phone.
"They had all the tubes hooked up. I was all by myself and I just burst into tears. Then I showed the nurse and she started crying with me."
Sebastian's prognosis is good. He has had two visits to the cardiologist since the surgery, and he will likely continue those visits because he is at risk for narrowing of the arteries.
Anne says she owes a debt of gratitude to all the cardiologists, including Dr. Charles Fraser, who saved her son's life.
"He put everything in such a way that you could understand ... he explained to us exactly what he was going to do. He didn't beat around the bush, he didn't sugarcoat it. He said, 'OK, this is it: There is a chance that he could die. It's a low chance, but there is that chance.'"
Now that it's all over, the Martins say they understand the reason why they never left Houston. So that's where they will be for Sebastian's first Christmas with family and friends.
