You never think about air bags until they get deployed. But MariClaRo has changed that, repurposing the materials to create a stylish backpack.

Each of the Canadian-made waterproof backpacks is a one-of-a-kind piece. MariClaRo says 99 percent of the materials are recycled from exploded airbags, with the remaining 1 percent comprising thread and the company’s logo. The bag is created on demand to color specifications, so it takes about three weeks to receive.

The bag has compression straps to enlarge or shrink compartments, with the dimensions measuring 60 by 33 by 25 centimeters.

This is a great way to breathe new life into a one-time-use material. After an airbag is deployed, it has to be replaced for safety reasons. The fabric can’t be reused in cars for fear of failing, but as MariClaRo shows, it’s still capable of lugging around a computer and some books.
