At 11:40 a.m. CST, Air Force One arrived at Dallas' Love Field after the 13-minute flight from Fort Worth's Carswell Air Force Base. Shortly after disembarking, President John F. Kennedy, Mrs. Kennedy, Texas Gov. John B. Connally and Mrs. Connally were greeted by local dignitaries, including Dallas Mayor Earle Cabell and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, who had arrived approximately five minutes earlier via Air Force Two. Cabell hoped the president's visit to the city would demonstrate that Dallas was no longer the "Southwest hate capital of Dixie." Mayor Cabell and fellow city officials were particularly sensitive in their desire to treat the president and his party with dignity and courtesy. This interest stemmed from their concern that the city might be less than forthcoming with its hospitality in light of the events of Oct. 24, 1963, when U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai E. Stevenson visited Dallas and was harassed by hostile demonstrators outside the Dallas Memorial Auditorium Theater.
