Non-bedroom areas in many homes are shared spaces meant to be enjoyed by the entire family, but that doesn't mean each person -- even your dad -- wouldn't love to have a dedicated spot to call his own. Sometimes, though, finding such a space can prove challenging, and adding a room onto your house might not be feasible. In these cases, the garage may be your ace in the hole. Many new single-family homes have them -- more than 80 percent, according to 2005 data from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). With a little creativity and elbow grease, you could transform a drab garage into a dad-friendly space just in time for Father's Day.

A garage may not seem like an actual, integrated part of the house the same way a living room or kitchen is, but that doesn't mean it can't become one. The biggest problem with many garages is that, though they were originally intended as a shelter for family cars, they've turned into super-sized junk drawers -- catchall dumping grounds for storing assorted odds and ends. For this reason, clearing the clutter is an essential first step to any garage makeover. Next, you'll need a great idea for redecorating the newly cleaned space, and your dad's interests should help influence that. Is he a handyman? A technophile? An exercise junkie? Depending on what he's into -- and what your budget is -- the possibilities are endless. Read on to find some of our favorite Father's Day garage makeover ideas, along with some tips for pulling them off.
