Normally, you see or hear about beached whales washing up on our coastlines, but what about a giant Lego man? That was the case in Sarasota, Florida earlier this week, when resident Jeff Hindman discovered one during a walk on the beach. Standing at 8 feet tall and weighing 100 lbs., the curious fiberglass Lego man — with a shirt reading “No real than you are” — was taking into custody by the Sarasota County Police. It will be held for 90 days (for what reason I wonder; did the Lego man commit a crime?) after of which it will be returned to Hindman if no one claims it. According to an article by the Sarasota Herald Tribune, Hindman will sell it on eBay.
So where did the Lego man come from? The Legoland amusement park in Florida? No, it’s landlocked. Legoland California? Hmm, no reports of floating Lego men passing through the Panama Canal. But the writing on the Lego man’s shirt pinpoints the possible source: Dutch artist Ego Leonard who was linked to two other mysterious Lego man statue beach sightings (with similar shirts) in Europe: 2007 in Holland and 2008 in England.
I wonder if Leonard has other giant Lego pieces to wash up on shore in the works? If so, it would be pretty easy to make bridges and boats I think.
