Violent Earth

New images of an undersea mountain near Japan show it plowing into the Earth five miles underwater. The red line in this image shows where the "seamount" is bulldozing ocean sediments up under the subduction zone where two tectonic plates meet. Scientists believe understanding the dynamics at play might help them understand how and when earthquakes happen.
