Microbes at Work
Jason DeJong/UC Davis

Microbes at Work
Samples of Bacillus pasteurii,  were injected into wet soils, shown here in bottom row of X-ray images, while the soils shown in the top row were not treated. The presence of newly-formed calcite in the microbe-treated soil samples was confirmed by these images. The whiteness in the images is proportional to the abundance of calcite.
