Stickiness Matters
Water from the Russell Fjord spills out of a channel past the Hubbard Glacier near Yakutat, Alaska, at a rate of 130 million gallons a minute as the glacial dam closing off the fjord broke in 2002. A new review of recent research suggests coastal ice flows can be slowed by "sticky spots" like rocky patches, or sped up by the lubricating effects of meltwater.
