Once Volatile Earth
The lavas of East Greenland, shown here, form a layered sequence up to five miles thick and are the relics of massive volcanic activity that accompanied the birth of the Northeast Atlantic approximately 55 million years ago. Scientists believe the activity triggered a mysterious past global warming episode not unlike the human-made climate crisis unfolding today.
