There have been five quakes of magnitude 9 or greater in the last half century -- a cluster including the tremendously deadly 2004 rupture offshore of northern Sumatra, which caused the damage seen here. Despite those statistics, such mega-quakes should occur only three times a century, on average, say scientists.
