Bringing the Outdoors in
Many of the rooms in Augustus' house on Palatine Hill featured intricate mosaics portraying scenes from nature, like the blackbird pictured here. The windowless rooms also feature comic masks, flowers, mythical animals, and garden vistas, showing startling depth in what may have been a primitive form of virtual reality.
