"We have found a number of plant species which are very vulnerable, but the surprising thing is, there've been some four plant species which have never been recorded on western Cape York," she said. "That's just remarkable and of course there's rare bird species, the spear-tooth shark, sawfish, and estuarine crocodiles." Cape Alumina, which has lodged a mining lease application which would overlap to about 15 percent of the Irwin's property, said it recognized the area's distinctive features. "We have no plans to develop in sensitive wet land areas of Cape York," the company's chief executive officer Paul Messenger said in a statement. The Queensland state government said an environmental assessment would be done to determine whether any mining could proceed. Bauxite is used to make aluminum.
