How It Works
This illustration shows how geologists extract rock cores from the notorious San Andreas Fault in California. Visible are the drill hole for the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) and the pilot hole drilled in 2002. The resulting cores are now available to explore by anyone with a computer and internet access.
