Barred Galaxy NGC 1300
The barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300, pictured here, lies some 70 million light-years away on the banks of the constellation Eridanus. Unlike their smaller cousins, large spiral galaxies (this one is more than 100,000 light-years wide) tended to develop their central bars early in the universe's history.
