"The hydrogen bonding that exists between those two entities are stronger than you would expect between water to water," he said.

The team's results appear in a special issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"It's very nice science confirming something that was speculated before," Ron Cohen of the University of California, Berkeley, told Discovery News.

Although Francisco says the results can be used to improve regional models of acid rain, Cohen suggests that the necessary information for those models was already known.

"This is very important underpinning basic science stuff," Cohen said, "It's not going to come up with our friends who study air quality."

"Marsha [Lester] has really been a pioneer at trying to make complexes [and stabilize them to determine their structure]" Cohen added. "She's really teaching us a lot about this whole class of problems."
