Lookalikes
On the left, a gully on Mars, thought to form by flowing water, trends downslope along a crater wall. On the right, a similar gully is found in Wright Valley, one of the ice-free valleys that comprise the Antarctic Dry Valleys on Earth. Like on Earth, gullies on Mars form from the melting of ice and snow that once dominated this landscape, say the authors of a new study. The shape of the gully and the position of the gully's fan over the surrounding landscape suggest that this feature is very young by martian standards, probably forming within the last several million years.
