Missing Its Magnetism
Around 4.2 billion years ago, Mars was bombarded with dozens of asteroids between 200 and 500 kilometers in diameter, each leaving a crater. One of those impacts, say scientists, may have been responsible for the extinction of the planet's magnetic field.
