Night-Shining Clouds

Night-Shining Clouds
Noctilucent, or "night-shining" clouds are transient, upper atmospheric phenomena that are usually observed in the summer months at high latitudes (greater than 50 degrees) of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They appear bright and cloudl-ike while in deep twilight. This astronaut photograph of the clouds was acquired from just over 200 miles in the pre-dawn hours on July 22, 2008, as the International Space Station was passing over western Mongolia in central Asia. The dark horizon of the Earth appears at the bottom of the image. | Watch Discovery News Videos!
