Rising Smoke and Ash
Mount St. Helens sends a plume of ash, smoke and debris skyward on May 18, 1980. The volcano's emissions contain COS, or carbonyl sulfide, which a new study has shown will cause amino acids to form together into peptides, essential building blocks for life.
