SGI Software Maps Underground Features
In a technique dubbed "ground thumping," sound waves — triggered by explosives or air pulses — are sent through a given area. Sensors then read the vibration patterns to determine the depth and the characteristics of the objects that they bounced off of. Analysts, with the help of computers then try to match the patterns with object profiles, such as missiles.
